Every year, eating disorders claim the lives of thousands of individuals, roughly 10,200 deaths (National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders). This shocking statistic puts eating disorders (often referred to as EDs) as one of the most deadly mental disorders– second only to opioid addiction. Many people pass away due to medical complications caused by EDs (such as heart failure or malnutrition), whereas others die by suicide, as simply having an ED can increase the risk of suicidality. However, many individuals never receive treatment or get a diagnosis due to medical neglect rooted in discrimination and the extreme cost of recovery treatment, namely individuals in the BIPOC community & those folx in the LGBTQ+ community. So, how and why are these vulnerable populations left out of this important conversation? How can the collective “we” address it?
